Lesley Chan works in the NHS as a midwife, she is also parent to four children, one of whom is Amelie. Amelie is profoundly Deaf and relies on BSL to communicate.
Lesley has been a strong driving force in campaigning for better access for Deaf people in the NHS, especially since using the NHS Change Day as a platform to raise awareness. Since then, the BBC News, The Guardian Newspaper and deaf blog Limping Chicken have all featured Amelie’s story, and Lesley’s pledge.
Throughout Deaf Awareness Week we are uploading clips made by medical professionals, D/deaf people and and NHS staff to raise Deaf awareness in the hearing community and in medical settings. Lesley was kind enough to share her experiences with us.
