The debate in the House of Lords, on Monday 2nd February, was the first time that psychological therapies delivered in BSL for Deaf people had any real space to be considered at ministerial level.
As service providers, we know that BSL Healthy Minds provides effective therapy for Deaf BSL users. Deaf people accessing our service have a recovery rate of 75% which is much higher than the Department of Health requirement, 50%, and the national recovery rate, 44%.
Deaf people have a right to the same access to psychological therapy services. They also have a right to choose who their provider is. However, 35% of our clients have previously tried to work with a hearing therapist using a BSL interpreter, but it was not successful. Because it didn’t work well they dropped out.
