After years of campaigning and persuasion, we have a chance of making the biggest improvement ever to healthcare for Deaf people in England.
Now we all need to make sure the opportunity isn’t lost. We need to come together as one — to be Healthier Together.
The rules are for doctors, hospitals, and other people providing NHS healthcare or adult services. Those professionals have until 31 July 2016 to make sure they are obeying the new rules.
Together we can make sure that our health professionals know about the changes, and make sure that they are doing everything they need to. And if they fail, then together we can make them change.
If no-one checks on the professionals and demands that they don’t break the rules, then nothing will change and the opportunity will be missed.
This is the greatest chance in our lifetimes to make sure Deaf people get healthcare that’s equivalent to the service for hearing people.
LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN.
That study showed that Deaf people are twice as likely as hearing people to have a life-threatening illness and not know about it. And if a condition has been diagnosed, it’s up to three times more likely that their treatment won’t be working.
“We’re proud of the Sick Of It report, and we’re proud that the changes it called for may actually happen”, says SignHealth’s Director of Communications, Paul Welsh.
“Now NHS England say that these new rules will mean doctors HAVE to ask Deaf people how they would like to communicate. And then they HAVE to make sure they provide whatever is needed to do that”.
“But, now is not the time to stop working. Now is the time to work even harder, and for everyone to do their bit – we need to make sure the rules are obeyed and that anyone who breaks them is punished”.
