I have been Deaf since birth and some of you know how I have not let my deafness stop me from achieving my dreams. Being a clinical psychologist is my biggest achievement to date.
For many Deaf people, access to health and mental health is very difficult. Lots of barrier from the start such as recognition of when something is wrong with your body (not many information is accessible to Deaf people) to going to the GP and struggling with communication to explain your symptoms. Unfortunatley for a lot of Deaf people, they are more likely to experience serious physical health and more likely to experience mental health.
As you know, I am a clinical psychologist and is very passionate about mental health and early prevention of mental health. I have seen first hand how SignHealth have helped Deaf people to gain better access to physical health and established first primary mental health care exclusively for Deaf people to access mental health. They also produced Sick of It report to highlight several barriers that Deaf people face when accessing health care that non-Deaf people take for granted. SignHealth also worked on increasing access for Deaf children with Sign 2 Sing campaign.
Some examples of what the money will go towards:
£500 could make a significant contribution towards the refurbishment costs of the garden in one of our supported housing projects for deaf people with additional mental health issues.£300 could provide 10 hours of support, care and advice by one of our deaf outreach workers, for a deaf person with mental health issues struggling to cope on their own. £100 could enable one of our profoundly deaf residents with mental health issues, to enjoy a life-enriching away day with their SignHealth support worker.£50 could provide a therapy session delivered by a deaf specialist, for a young deaf person here in the UK who has suffered neglect and abuse, to help them cope with their traumatic experience. I hope that is helpful, I can provide more detail if you like!
Running this Marathon is another one of my dream and I am pleased to say that I will be taking part in the London Marathon and I am raising money for SignHealth to help future Deaf children and adult to have an equal access to health and mental health.
Update – I have now completed half marathon and has been training extremely hard for this!
