New research shows that exercise helps remove chemicals from the body that cause depression.
When we exercise, the muscles in our body produce ‘enzymes’. These enzymes clear out one molecule (a tiny part of the body) that is linked to depression.
This new research is really exciting – firstly, it shows that exercising may help reduce depression, and if people exercise regularly, they will have a lower risk of developing it to start with.
Secondly, if a new pill can be made to copy the effects exercise has on the body, it could help beat depression.
At the moment, researchers think cardiovascular (CV) exercise is the most effective. That includes running, cycling, swimming, rowing and kick boxing, and any other exercise that gets the heart pumping.
