SignHealth’s advocacy service works with Deaf people to make sure they are treated fairly and that get what they’re are entitled to. It’s all done using BSL. Advocates work to help people understand complicated situations, explain their rights, and make sure their views and opinions are properly heard.
If you use the service our advocates won’t take control, tell you what to do, or advise you what is best for you. Those are things you can do for yourself with the right help.
We are qualified in the following areas: –
- Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) – this service is for those detained under the Mental Health Act 1984 (amended 2007). There are seven specialist Deaf units within Mental Health Hospitals across England.
- Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA) – according to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 if a person is deemed to lack capacity then an IMCA is instructed by the decision-maker to ascertain the wishes and feelings of the person by communicating with family, friends and carers.
- Generic Advocacy – is advocacy provided to a person who may be in prison, involved in an employment disciplinary, housing issues, benefits tribunal, amongst other issues. Individuals requiring an Advocate to give them a voice/sign to be heard/seen in any meeting.
- One of our freelance advocates is qualified to advocate for adolescents and children in Mental Health Hospitals. This is in line with the Children’s Act guidelines.
Where we work
We cover all areas across the country, but we do require funding for all of our services.
We do not have a drop-in service for the community. We do have drop-in services for certain specialist Deaf residential homes, which we visit every three months. We also respond to ad-hoc referrals, pending funding approval.
