Imagine it’s Christmas and you have very little money to feed your family or heat your house, let alone buy gifts for your children. That’s exactly what happened to a client of SignHealth Outreach Worker Matt Royce.
Matt began his career working in a bank but knew he wanted to do something more challenging. He now works at SignHealth’s Constance Way home which, as well as housing residents, has a busy Outreach service and drop-in centre.
As part of the Leeds Outreach Team, Matt works with Deaf clients in and around the city, helping them with a variety of issues from dealing with their finances to building their social life. Partially Deaf and fluent in BSL, Matt is able to adapt his communication to suit the needs of clients and understands how Deaf people think and feel.
I sourced funding for heating and arranged for a Food Bank to deliver to her home, leaving her with money for presents. It made her Christmas!
Many of his clients begin their journey with him when they visit the Drop In Centre in Leeds city centre.
“Quite often they come to us with for help with major issues, which is when I turn them into a full client” explains Matt.
Since he began working for SignHealth, Matt’s been able to make a real difference to the lives of the Deaf people he works with, including the client who found herself in financial difficulties at Christmas
“I sourced some funding for heating and arranged for a local Food Bank to deliver to her home, leaving her with some money for presents.” says Matt “It made her Christmas!”
