Update: Congratulations to Leicestershire Police and the Police Link Officers for Deaf people (PLOD), winner of the Signature’s Community Impact award.
Leicestershire Police and the Police Link Officers for Deaf people (PLOD) – who are working with InterpreterNow, a SignHealth company delivering Video Relay services – have been shortlisted for a national award. The award is for making the police service more accessible to deaf people.
National deaf charity Signature recently announced the shortlist for their 2015 Signature Annual Awards. PLOD, which includes police officers and staff from across Leicestershire, is up for the Community Impact award.
PLOD members receive training in deaf awareness and British Sign Language (BSL). They work with the deaf and hard of hearing people in the community, determining the best way they can offer help, support and guidance.
It’s a tremendous privilege to work with Leicestershire PLOD. Their understanding of the needs of deaf people and commitment to communication with the local deaf community is an example to all. John Maidens, InterpreterNow
The team have also worked closely with SignHealth’s InterpreterNow Video Relay Service, . Through either the website or the InterpreterNow app, Deaf people in Leicestershire can now call the Leicestershire Police 101 in BSL making the county’s police service instantly accessible to all Deaf people who live there. This service is available, free of charge from 0800 – 2400, 7 days a week.
Sergeant Emma Gilbert the Manager of PLOD at Leicestershire Police said:
“Having the PLOD service available gives the Deaf community the same rights as everyone else, raises their confidence in the police force and benefits all involved.
“Members put in a lot of extra effort and training to provide the service, way beyond their normal day-today duties, so it’s great to see them receive formal recognition and thanks”.
