Deaf people can’t make and receive phone calls without specialist technology, so how do they get help in an emergency?
They text. A national text number has been set up that allows Deaf people, or people with hearing difficulties, to get 999 help quickly. But, unlike hearing people, they must register their phones before they make a call.
SignHealth are urging all D/deaf people to register their phones now, because when an emergency happens, time is precious.
How does a D/deaf person register their phone? We have written a step by step guide on our website (and translated it into British Sign Language) explaining how.
Please share this page with any D/deaf friends or family you have. It could save their life.
Please help us to help the Deaf community by donating to SignHealth. Your money allows us to provide Deaf counselling, Deaf domestic abuse support, and 24 hour supported living to Deaf people with mental health issues.
