There is no one single cause of IBS, but traumatic life events and inflammation, caused for instance by a previous attack of gastroenteritis, can make the gut more sensitive and irritable. Symptoms can then be triggered by dietary components or stress (food and mood).
Who gets IBS?
Anyone can get it, though some people get it more severely than others. IBS is more frequently diagnosed in women compared with men, in younger people compared with the elderly and in western countries compared with the developing world. It is commonly associated with emotional tension and is frequently triggered by life changes, difficult life situations or stressful life events.[clear-line]
