Norovirus has no cure, so you have to let it run its course. It’s usually mild, not dangerous, and normally lasts a couple of days. Most people make a full recovery within a couple of days without the need to see their GP.
If you catch norovirus, the following advice will help to ease your symptoms:
• Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
• Take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains
• If you feel like eating, eat foods that are easy to digest
• Stay at home – don’t go and see your GP because the virus is highly contagious and there’s nothing your GP can do while you have it
• Contact your GP to seek advice if your symptoms last longer than a few days or if you already have a serious illness.
Babies and small children who have diarrhoea and vomiting, extra care is needed to prevent them from getting dehydrated by giving them plenty of fluids and they can still drink milk.
