Looking at your mouth
From time to time, look into your mouth in front of the mirror. Look at your tongue, gums, lining of your cheeks, lips, under your tongue and the roof of your mouth for any unusual changes.
Your dentist can help
Your dentist can help by checking areas in your mouth that you can’t see yourself. They are trained to see if there are any health problems in your mouth and can identify early warning signs of mouth cancer if they notice anything unusual. If that happens, the dentist will refer you to hospital for more tests.
If you are over 40, smoke, chew tobacco or betel nut, drink alcohol or all of these, when you visit your dentist, make sure you ask your dentist to check your mouth for any warning signs. It is important that you have regular dental check ups even if you don’t have your own teeth.
