It’s no secret that Deaf people have poorer health than hearing people, because access to healthcare is made difficult when sign language is the main way you communicate. But there had never been a large scale, scientific study to see how bad things are … until SignHealth’s Deaf Health report.
We began our study by questioning almost 1,300 deaf adults across the country, and went on to carry out full medicals and detailed interviews.
The results are clear, and shocking, and we will be publishing them on 25th March 2014 at a major Deaf health conference we are organising in London. Then we will use those results to try to change government policy, and the way that medical professionals work with Deaf people.
The good news is that the study has already saved lives, because some of the people who took the BUPA medicals discovered life-threatening conditions which they just weren’t aware of.
We hope that it will go on to save many more, and to change the way medical professionals treat Deaf people.
The BBC’s See Hear programme covered the study and how it was carried out, and you can see clips of that episode here: See Hear
