Dr Sarah Powell is a Deaf Clinical Psychologist/Step 3 Practitioner working for BSL Healthy Minds, a service from our Deaf Health Charity, SignHealth. She supports Deaf, deafened and deafblind people who are suffering from depression and anxiety.
Writing in the BDN, Dr Powell explains the difficulties Deaf people encounter when accessing mainstream mental health services. She describes treatment and techniques used to support Deaf people, and how service providers can improve access.
“I’ve come across lots of clients who have accessed mainstream services using an interpreter and they have found it not to be beneficial and in some cases, made their symptoms worse.”
