Meet Dr Andrew Alexander, SignHealth’s Medical Director. With 30 years experience working as a hospital doctor, and two daughters, one of whom is Deaf, Andrew is not only medically qualified to campaign on behalf of SignHealth, but acutely aware of Deaf barriers.
He can also sign.
In 2013, Andrew was appointed as SignHealth’s Medical Director and immediately focused his attention towards the Sick Of It report.
What is the Sick Of It report?
Andrew has been a fundamental part of the team working with public Health England, the Care Quality Commission, and the NHS England Team. He’s formed a relationship with Sir Mike Richards and Prof. Steve Field (two key people at CQC) and he’s been involved in creating a new set of health standards to improve access and equality for Deaf people.
In regards to the government, Andrew has also secured two House of Lords debates, and has formed a strong relationship with Lord Hunt.
Paul Stemman, SignHealth’s Head of Policies and Campaigns, added, “Thanks to Andrew we now have the first really strong piece of evidence on the health of Deaf people – Sick Of It – and we have links to some of the key people who can make improvements to the care of Deaf people. It’s been fantastic for the charity to have his involvement and commitment. Our position as an organisation has changed as a result, and we’re now far better placed to fulfil our aim of improving the health of Deaf people.”
