Brian is a 54 year old Deaf sign-language user who suffers from severe anxiety and panic attacks
Brian has no contact with his family. He suffers from severe anxiety and panic attacks, which can result in suicidal thoughts and self-harm.
He is an extremely intelligent man, who is deeply interested in art. He works full-time in a factory and volunteers in a local bookshop, which he loves.
Many Deaf people find it hard to understand the written word because it is unheard and has a different structure to sign language, but Brian has overcome this barrier and developed a good ability to read and write.
SignHealth is supporting Brian with his anxiety, and works with his Community Psychiatric Nurse to develop his ability to self-manage his condition. There are still many occasions, often late at night, when Brian has a crisis and is extremely distressed or even suicidal. Without SignHealth and the Emergency Duty Team, Brian would find it very hard to live with his mental health problems, and may not survive them.
SignHealth is in the process of delivering Psychological Therapy to Brian (in sign language) and this is expected to significantly improve his sense of well-being and personal recovery.
We’ve made up the name Brian, to protect the identity of the man we support. All the other details in his story are unchanged.
