The age of consent for any sexual activity is 16 for both men and women.
Any sexual activity with someone under 16 is illegal.
Saying you thought the person is older is not a defence.
Even though this is the law, you will not get in trouble by talking to a doctor, nurse or professional in a sexual health clinic if you are having sex or thinking about having sex before you are 16. They will only pass on information if they think you or someone else is in danger (for example being abused, being forced into sex or being taken advantage of).[clear-line]
