A new study published in the BMJ Open suggests UK doctors are slow to refer potential cancer patients.
BBC News has reported only 38% of UK doctors would refer patients for cancer testing, compared to 61% of doctors in other countries. The problem is poor access to CT and MRI scans which are used to check for tumours.
Cancer Research UK added that early diagnosis means a better chance of survival.
The Deaf Health Charity SignHealth are reminding Deaf people to be aware of cancer symptoms. Spotting symptoms early can make recovery faster.
If you’ve had a cough for more than 3 weeks, it could be a symptom of lung cancer. Click here for information about lung cancer in BSL.
Have you noticed a strange mole? It could be a symptom of skin cancer. Click here for information about skin cancer in BSL.
Deaf people also have a higher risk of missed diagnosis. SignHealth’s Deaf health study, the Sick Of It report, showed communication problems lead to
- missed diagnosis
- poor treatment
- shortened lives
